I’ve been doing a lot of thinking lately about goals for this new school year. With two young kids sometimes my life feels like I’m just treading water all the time. I do my best to stay afloat, but don’t seem to go anywhere. My days are filled with the work of making sure that everyone in this house has clean clothes to wear and food to eat. I know I should view that in itself as a big accomplishment, but with a new school year beginning, I think now would be a good time to consider making time in my days for all the things I want to do besides loading dishwashers and folding laundry. I’d like to look back upon this year and see that I didn’t just expend all my energy to stay afloat in one spot, but that I actually made it to the other side of the pool.
So after mulling it over a bit, I concluded that two things that I’d like to do more this new season is to 1) blog more regularly and 2) read the Bible more and get into the truth of the Word more. So as a way to do both, I’ve decided to start a new series of posts called Truth Tuesdays. This will be in addition to my Five Minute Fridays (if you don’t know what that is, see here). The idea is that every Tuesday I’ll post about a nugget of truth I’ve dug out in my reading of the Bible or different Christian ministry books and how I can apply it in my daily experience. Please feel free to comment and/or share your own nuggets of enjoyment from the Word each week. Maybe I should rename my blog “Pearls of wisdom and nuggets of truth?”
So without further ado…here’s a verse I enjoyed this morning while sipping my coffee (after CC went to school and Turner was down for his nap).
And all drank the same spiritual drink; for they drank of a spiritual rock which followed them, and the rock was Christ. (I Cor. 10:4)
To appreciate this verse, you have to know a little of the background of the journeys of the Children of Israel in the wilderness as told in the Old Testament. After Moses led the Israelites out of Egypt, he was faced with the problem of how to keep them from dying of thirst since they were basically wandering around in a desert. So God showed Moses a rock and told him to strike it, and miraculously after he struck it, water flowed out of it. During those forty years of wandering, this smitten rock is what the people drank from. Moses’ striking of the rock is what released the waters from it the first time; but God’s command to them the subsequent times was simply to speak to the rock.
Paul unveils to us in I Corinthians 10:4 that Christ Himself is this rock. Jesus Himself said many times in the Gospel of John that He is the living water for us to drink. We don’t need to look to things in our environment to satisfy our thirst; in reality our environment is just a desert. God has provided a rock for us to drink from – this Christ who was “struck” for us on the cross. When He was crucified, out from His side flowed blood and water. Now whenever we’re thirsty, we just need to speak to this rock and water will flow out to quench our thirst. But what I really appreciated this morning was that Paul said this rock followed them. Is that not awesome? Christ as the rock follows us wherever we go! All we have to do is to speak to Him and the living waters will flow. I enjoyed having this rock follow me to Target today, and to pick up CC at preschool. As I conversed with the Lord throughout my day, I realized I wasn’t so spiritually dry or thirsty. So as you go about your week, don’t forget to look behind you. You’ll find that there’s a rock following you…He’s not there to trip you up but to water you.
