The prompt for this week is…

Visit

GO

We moved in almost 6 months ago and there are still unpacked boxes stacked haphazardly in our bedroom. Just last week I finally decided to do something about it, so I stacked some of them neatly in the closet of the kids’ room so I wouldn’t have to look at them. The curtains I had envisioned for the house never happened…or hasn’t happened yet. Picture frames are propped up against walls screaming to be hung up. Every weekend we say we’ll do something but then before we know it another weekend has gone and past and everything is still in the same place.

If it was up to me I’d probably never have anyone over until the house was pinterest worthy, just the way I want it. But thankfully, it’s not up to me. The Lord gave us this tent not to be pinned, but to be flung open to visitors. Which is exactly why we haven’t gotten around to unpacking boxes and hanging pictures yet. Weekends have come and gone and we’ve been too busy caring for all the visitors, some for an hour or two, some for a week or two. I’m reminded of the story of Zacchaeus, how the Lord told him as he was up in the tree that he was going to his house today. What if Zacchaeus (or his wife) had said, “But Lord, the place is a mess, and the curtains aren’t up yet, etc.” What a visit he would have missed out on. The Lord doesn’t wait for our house or our hearts to be perfect, He wants to visit us today. And sometimes His visitation comes in the form of hungry college students or neighbors who just want to stop by.

A new semester started this week and tonight our tent door will again be open to whosoever will. As I welcome these students into my imperfect home, somehow they also get into my imperfect heart. Maybe I’ll make time to hang at least one picture on the wall this weekend though.
